Xiang Xi Bao er en lille by i det sydlige Kina, hvor tiden har stået stille i forbløffende grad. En gang en travl flodhavn i krydderitransport mistede byen al relevans, da handelen forsvandt. Intet har ændret byen, dens fæstningsborg og dens bygninger siden de kinesiske kejsere. Ingen politisk uro, ingen kulturrevolution. I dag er byen Xiang Xi Bao en historisk skat af enorm betydning.

Arkitekt Frederick Rickmann er blevet inviteret til at støtte den omhyggelige ombygning af samfundet, bygningerne, slottet og templerne og til at integrere dette svar til de mennesker, der faktisk bor i byen.

Der er flere udfordringer i projektet. Den ene er, hvordan man udfører en større restaurering af byen og alligevel lader borgerne forblive på plads. Den anden er, hvordan man balancerer turistinteressen udefra, så et stort antal besøgende ikke fortynder byens kvalitet. Meget af indvirkningen af ​​disse dilemmaer absorberes af arkitekt Frederick Rickmanns plan for "omvendt rumudvikling". Denne koncentration på rummet mellem de levedygtige bygninger giver meget spillerum for investeringer og fremskridt. Ved at bruge dette fællesrum og de mange eksisterende ubeboelige bygninger er der rigelig plads til betydelig udvikling - også økonomisk for bybefolkningen.

Enkelt sagt koncentrerer vi os om de fælles rum mellem eksisterende bygninger, pladserne og gyden. Dertil kommer de mange forladte huse. De bygninger, der skal restaureres først, er dem, der i dag ikke har tag og er ubeboede ruiner. På denne måde regenereres samfundets struktur hurtigt og tiltrækker hurtigt indtægter. Med øget indre investering kommer job, indkomst og tilskud til befolkningen.
