People often ask me: what is "design"?
Simple answer: "Design" is communication.
Let's put it this way: how are the products on the market made?
Suppose a person wants to start a business to sell a product. He finds an industrial designer and tells him the idea. At this time, after listening to the needs of the client (entrepreneur), the industrial designer combines professional design thinking with mass-production’s engineering concept; fully consider user experiences and shape products into pleasing products based on aesthetics; present the design drawings to the client. From now on, the abstract ideas of entrepreneurs finally have a concrete blueprint front of him. Entrepreneur and industrial designer use this blueprint (design draft) as a communication medium to study and discuss together so that products can be produced stably in the most economical way. The content may include industrial production details, raw material procurement, production and assembly plans, good and appropriate packaging, visual design that is not distracting, how to enter the market for sales, and officially become the pricing of commodity sales.
In other words, the whole process of turning abstract ideas into concrete goods is industrial design, and the important element that ties it all together is communication.
Things that were custom-made by craftsmen for the royal families in the past are now available through modern industrial design, so the common people can easily have them now. From a macro perspective, design is an important driving force for improving human society and promoting freedom and equality.
